Wimbledon draw leaves fans fuming over mix-up as graphic displays wrong player

Must read

Friday’s Wimbledon ladies singles draw was plunged into chaos after an embarrassing mix-up between organisers.

The draw kicked off with World No.1 Iga Swiatek the top seed whilst Britain’s Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter awaited their first round opponents.

Wimbledon referee Denise Parnell headed up the draw on Friday morning, before the tournament begins on Monday July 1.

Things initially started well and as planned, before taking a rather embarrassing turn.

A mix-up between those in the draw room and the graphics team saw Russian player Mirra Andreeva appear on the screen instead of Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia.

The muddle up resulted in further confusion for the remainder of the draw which saw players being drawn into the wrong lines.

It led to mass confusion in the room between Wimbledon staff and media, with Parnell having to pause the draw to put things straight before they could continue.

Fans watching the draw online were also left baffled over the scenes.

“Wimbledon women’s draw has been a bit of a mess so far,” one account posted on X. “They got a few names mixed up, [Mirra] Andreeva was moved around about three times already.”

Another wrote said on social media: “Thought I’d tune into the Wimbledon draw for the first time ever, and what an absolute shambles, what is going on?”

After the early blunder was fixed, the rest of the draw continued as planned, with unseeded Raducanu drawn against 22nd seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the first round.

Coco Gauff is the second seed at Wimbledon this year and will play fellow American Caroline Dolehide, while wild card Naomi Osaka will face Diane Parry of France.

British No.1 Katie Boulter faces Germany’s Tatjana Maria in the opening round while wildcard entrant Heather Watson will play Belgium’s Greet Minnen.

Arguably the biggest clash of the first round sees Iga Swiatek go up against former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin.

In the men’s draw, reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz kicks off his defence against Mark Lajal of Estonia while last year’s beaten finalist Novak Djokovic will face Vit Kopriva.

Andy Murray will play his first round clash against Czech Tomas Machac on Tuesday if he decides to play singles. The 37-year-old faces a race against time to be fit after undergoing a minor surgical procedure last weekend.

Britain’s Jack Draper was drawn against Elias Ymer with fellow home favourite Cameron Norrie facing off against Facundo Diaz Acastoa.

Should the two Brits come through their first round matches, then they would play each other in round two.
