Beloved musician and former Australian Idol contestant Courtney Murphy has returned to work following his advanced bowel cancer diagnosis.
The 44-year-old — who is one-third of Perth band The Murphy Brothers — is set to release a new song with his siblings Chris and Kieran just three months after he shared his devastating battle with the disease.
The song is called Perfect Little Mess and is the first single from their upcoming album Something in the Water.
The song will feature Robbie McIntosh — a former guitarist for The Pretenders who went on to tour with Paul McCartney and John Mayer — and will be available on all streaming platforms on July 3.
Chris Murphy said it was great to share new music after the painful few months his family has endured amid Courtney’s diagnosis and their father’s death.
“With all the love and support we’ve received these past few months, it’s great to be able to share some new music,” Chris said.
“Courtney’s really proud of this album — we all are.
“It was a lot of fun to put together, and Courtney turned in a phenomenal performance. Of course, he steals the show.”
In early April, the music industry was rocked when it was revealed Courtney — who placed third in the 2004 season of Australia Idol after Anthony Callea and winner Casey Donovan — was fighting for his life.
“Our beautiful brother Courtney Murphy is in for the fight of his life,” his family announced on a GoFundMe.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share Court has been diagnosed with advanced stage bowel cancer. It’s very serious.”
Courtney has since undergone extensive chemo and surgery as part of his treatment.
While no further updates have been provided on his diagnosis, supporters were elated to see the musician smiling on stage at a gig in early June.
