Bronny James, the oldest son of NBA great LeBron James, created a social media frenzy when the Lakers selected the 19-year-old with the No. 55 pick in the second round of the NBA Draft on Thursday night.
While the selection doesn’t guarantee that LeBron and Bronny will ever play in a game together, or that Bronny will make the Lakers roster next season, the possibility left the sports world buzzing.
If it all pans out, they would become the first father-son on-court duo in the NBA simultaneously as players. No father and son have ever played together in the NBA, but Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr. did it in baseball.
Here’s what they are saying about the NBA’s father-son duo:
“BRON Getting To See His Son In The Same Jersey As Him Gotta Be The Biggest FLEX Shoutout BRONNY!!!!!” –– Hawks guard Dejounte Murray
“I don’t want to hear the charges, people talking about nepotism. The NBA is full of nepotism. The ownership level, front offices, coaching. I don’t want to hear about it all of a sudden because Bronny James’ father plays for the Lakers. It is rampant in this league.” — ESPN NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski
“The Lakers draft Bronny James and now all of a sudden some people have a problem with nepotism.” — Former NFL QB Robert Griffin III
“Bronny James To The @Lakers! CONGRATULATIONS! So Damn Cool! @KingJames And His Son Side By Side! LFG!! WOOOOO! Nothing Greater In Life Than Seeing Your Legacy Carried On Through Your Children!” — WWE legend Ric Flair
“Congratulations to Bronny James on being drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers! This is a historic moment because LeBron and Bronny are the first father-son duo to play in the NBA at the same time and on the same team. Watching Bronny suit up for the @Lakers during Summer League in Vegas will be must-see TV!” — Lakers legend Magic Johnson
