Police confirmed on Friday Benjamin Scott Art, 42, was charged with murder after the body of Annette Kiss was found at a home on Clements St in Russell Lea about 11am on Thursday morning.
Emergency services were called to the property on the morning following reports of a “domestic incident”.
When they arrived on the scene, they found the body with horrific injuries.
Mr Art was arrested at the scene and transported to Prince Alfred Hospital for assessment and treatment of injuries, before being taken to Burwood Police Station.
He did not apply for bail and was not required to appear in Parramatta Local Court on Friday after spending the night behind bars on remand.
The matter has been adjourned to Burwood Local Court for August.
Superintendent Christine McDonald said at a media conference on Thursday Ms Kiss, in her 50s, suffered fatal stab wounds, with “significant and multiple injuries” to her upper body.
According to the Daily Telegraph, she also suffered a cut throat.
A member of the public first raised the alarm to police, saying on a Triple Zero call that a woman was “screaming and needed help”.
She told reporters that she knew the victim and the other housemates moved into the residence “about five to six weeks ago”.

Supt McDonald said Mr Art and Ms Kiss were not in a romantic relationship, and the 42-year-old had moved into the Russell Lea home a few weeks ago.
“They were not in an intimate relationship, the fact that they are living together, residing under the one roof, albeit for two to three weeks, makes it a domestic violence incident,” she said.
