Celine Dion Broke the Fashion “Rules” While Making a Rare Appearance Amid Her Ongoing Health Battle

When it comes to fashion, Celine Dion has long marched to the beat of her own drum. Let’s not forget that she wore her blazer backwards on the Oscars red carpet in 1999 and was sporting cut-outs way before they were cool—so, it comes as little surprise that she ignored the traditional style guidelines while picking out her outfit for the 2024 Upper Deck NHL Draft in Las Vegas on Friday. 

For the occasion, Dion wore the “rule”-breaking color combination of cream and white, opting for a short-sleeved white button-down with an ivory midi-length skirt that featured a quilted pattern and a matching belt at the waist. The Grammy winner accessorized with vanilla-toned peep-toe pumps, tiny diamond hoops, and a gold-and-diamond statement necklace. Her blonde hair was styled in loose waves, while glossy pink lips and a generous swirl of blush to each cheek matched the easy, breezy nature of her outfit. 

At the event, Dion was tasked with announcing the Montreal Canadiens’ fifth-round draft pick. Holding the hand of her eldest son, René-Charles Angélil, as she took the stage, the singer told the audience, “I’m excited. [I’m] not even a hockey mom,” before revealing the team’s pick of Ivan Demidov from Russia.

Dion’s surprise appearance comes just a few days after she released her new documentary, I Am: Celine Dion, which gives a candid look behind her ongoing battle with the stiff person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that causes muscle rigidity and painful spasms. While promoting the film, she revealed why she decided to share her diagnosis with the public in 2022 during an interview with Today.

Revealing that she started experiencing symptoms of SPS in 2008, Dion tried to hide her illness for years until she eventually reached her breaking point. “I could not do this anymore,” Dion told host Hoda Kotb. “Lying for me, the burden was too much. Lying to the people who got me where I am today, I could not do it anymore.”
