Atlanta Dream player joins Canada’s Olympic basketball team

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Laeticia Amihere, an Atlanta Dream forward, has been named to the named to the 2024 Canada Women’s National Basketball Olympic Team roster, according to Canada Basketball.

Amihere is the second Atlanta Dream player to participate in this year’s Paris games, joining teammate Rhyne Howard, who represents Team USA. She is also the first Dream player to be named to the Olympic 5-on-5 women’s basketball roster since 2016.

Now as a two-time Olympian, Amihere will be the first Canadian Olympian in Dream franchise history.

“I’m excited to go into my second Olympics with more experience under my belt,” Amihere said. “It will be the first opportunity to play in front of family for Team Canada. I’m proud to be able to represent my country, my family and show all the hard work I’ve been putting in”

It will be Amihere‘s second appearance at the Olympic games with Team Canada, her first being during the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games while she was still playing on the University of South Carolina’s women’s basketball team. At 22 years old, she will be the youngest Dream player to compete at the Olympics.

Amihere’s first appearance for Team Canada was in 2016 as a member of the U16 FIBA AmeriCup, before her call up to the women’s national team in 2017, where she has had 27 appearances.

Team Canada’s women’s basketball team will play its first Olympic game against France on July 29, and Team USA will play its first game later that day.
