Victorians have been urged to watch out for symptoms of measles after an infected traveller returned home from overseas with the highly-contagious disease.

The infected traveller boarded a flight from Singapore to Melbourne on Monday, arriving at Melbourne International Airport early on Tuesday morning.

Over the next few days, the person visited several busy public locations along the Great Ocean Road, including a McDonald’s restaurant, a Coles supermarket and a toy store.

Measles is a highly infectious virus that can potentially lead to serious health complications, such as pneumonia and encephalitis.

Early symptoms of the measles can appear similar to those of COVID-19 and influenza. They include a fever, cough, sore or red eyes (conjunctivitis) and a runny nose.

These symptoms are often followed by a red rash, which usually starts on the face before spreading down the body.

Measles symptoms can develop between 7 to 18 days after exposure.

Anyone who visited the same locations as the infected traveller (listed below) should be on the lookout for symptoms of measles.
