Football fans in the Netherlands took to the streets on Tuesday evening to celebrate Oranje and Turkey’s wins in the round of 16 of the European Championship 2024. The police had to manage cheering and partying crowds with flags, fireworks, and honking car horns in several places, NOS reports. The two teams will face each other in the quarter-finals.

Oranje supporters took to the streets en masse. They set off fireworks in Enschede and Apeldoorn, among other places. Fireworks shattered a shop window in IJmuiden. The police closed a road in Vroomshoop due to the masse of orange-clad supporters and their orange smoke flares walking on the street.

Turkish fans also celebrated in many places throughout the country by waving flags and honking car horns. Police monitored these festivities in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Tilburg, among others.

The two groups of fans celebrated together in Amersfoort, where the police had to close off a roundabout. Oranje and Turkish fans gathered at the traffic circle, playing music and celebrating their teams’ victories.

The Netherlands and Turkey will face each other in the quarter-finals at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday. According to NOS, an Amsterdam city councilor has asked to screen the match on big screens on a square in the Nieuw-West district so that Dutch and Turkish fans can watch it together.
