‘Aggravated’ Rabs hits out at Origin speculation

Must read

Nine commentary legend Ray Warren has fired up over social media rumours he was set to return to the box to call his 100th State of Origin clash.

Warren hung up the microphone two years ago this week.

He called 99 Origins in his career, and rumours began swirling recently he may return to make it a ton.

But the commentary icon was unimpressed by the speculation.

“It’s absolute scuttlebutt,” Warren said on Triple M Gold Coast on Wednesday morning.

“I never ever said that I would agree to do another game of Origin, and somebody took the liberty via social media to absolutely misquote me and it’s made things a bit uncomfortable for me, but that’s the way it is.

“I get very aggravated by people that write absolute crap.”

Warren said he will never return to the commentary box.

“No, I’d rule that out almost without any thought at all.

“I had a great career – 55 years. At the end of 2021, I decided that that would do me, why would I take that risk of undoing whatever good I might have done.

“I’m turning 81 early next month … I got out while I was going reasonably well.”

Warren tipped the Blues to get the job done in this year’s Origin series.

But there was one thing he believed coach Michael Maguire could have done.

“I am interested though that James (Tedesco) is coming back to replace Dylan (Edwards), I wonder did it go across their minds that maybe James should be reinstated as captain,” Warren said.

“That’s just an angle that I don’t think has been explored. That’s all.”
