Alex de Minaur in hot water with partner after double title delight

Must read

Alex de Minaur has copped a cheeky warning from his partner Katie Boulter after failing to replicate his globe-trotting feat on a title-winning Sunday on grass for the tennis couple.

De Minaur will rise to a new career-high world No.7 ranking on the back of his triumph in ‘s-Hertogenbosch while Boulter earned a confidence-boosting triumph in Nottingham following a tough clay-court season.

The double delight echoed when the pair won on the same weekend in Acapulco and San Diego in March, with de Minaur rushing from Mexico to watch Boulter’s final.

But even though it was all but impossible this time Boulter couldn’t resist a dig at de Minaur after she sealed back-to-back titles.

“My boyfriend didn’t make the trip even though I thought he might after his win in ‘s-Hertogenbosch,” she laughed.

“We will have to be talking about that tonight and see if we’re still gonna be together. I hope he’s listening to this because we’ve got some talking to do.”

Boulter entered her final having kept a keen eye on de Minaur’s match in the Netherlands: “Inspiration everyday. New career-high No.7.”

From a distance, De Minaur then celebrated Boulter’s back-to-back Nottingham feat: “No way you just did that.”

“Double trouble, another unreal week,” he wrote of their title-winning day.

De Minaur played as the top seed at an ATP Tour event for the first time and humbled all comers, never dropping his set on his way to a 6-2 6-4 victory over Sebastian Korda in the final.

“It achieves a new career-high for me, so that’s always a great little bonus,” De Minaur.

“My first week on grass couldn’t have gone any better, so I’m looking forward to next week at Queen’s and the whole grass-court season with a smile on my face. I’m glad I was able to get a win here in Holland.”

The Aussie reeled off six straight games from 2-2 in the first set to seize control of the match, and broke his American opponent three times in the second set.

“Obviously it was a great match. Tricky conditions, and Seb is a hell of a player,” said De Minaur.

“I’m looking forward to playing doubles with him next week at Queen’s. I’m super happy with the week. It’s been great. Happy days.”

De Minaur will be the second seed in singles at Queen’s as he bids to go one better than last year when he was runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz.

Alcaraz, after just a week off to celebrate his French Open triumph, is in the Queen’s draw as the No.1 seed.

Boulter, the third seed in Nottingham, was forced to double up on Sunday.

She came from a set down in a semi-final against US Open champion Emma Raducanu and again just hours later in the final against former world No.1 Karolina Pliskova.

“I’m not sure if I’m dreaming or this just happened,” Boulter said.

“This place has a special place in my heart and it has been an incredible week for me.”

Boulter will be the fourth seed in Birmingham this week.
