During an interview at the Computex 2024 Taipei International Computer Show, AMD Senior Technical Marketing Manager Donny Woligroski shared insights into the ongoing development of the 3D V-Cache technology in the upcoming Zen 5 processors. While specifics on the “differentiating factor” that AMD plans to introduce with the Ryzen 9000 series X3D processors were not disclosed, speculation suggests a few possibilities, including variable 3D V-Cache capacities across different processor models and the inclusion of dual 3D V-Cache chips in processors with dual Core Complex Dies (CCDs).
The Ryzen 7000X3D series, which introduced AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology, debuted on February 28, 2023, approximately five months after the standard Ryzen 7000 series. This timeline suggests that the Ryzen 9000 series X3D versions could be expected to launch towards the end of this year or in early next year, maintaining a similar release schedule. AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology is significant as it represents a notable shift in processor cache architecture, aiming to drastically improve processor speed and efficiency by increasing the amount of cache directly accessible by the CPU cores. This technology has been particularly beneficial in enhancing performance in data-intensive tasks and gaming, where larger cache sizes can substantially reduce latency and improve frame rates.
We have a lot to say about X3D. The bottom line is that we are not resting on our laurels. We are improving the capabilities of X3D, which is really exciting and I am very much looking forward to discussing this with you all. It’s not like, hey, we put X3D in the chip, too. We’re actively working on really cool differentiators to make it better. We’re working on X3D, we’re improving it.

The potential introduction of processors with differing cache capacities suggests a strategic differentiation that could cater to various user needs, from mainstream users to high-end enthusiasts. Additionally, the possibility of dual 3D V-Cache chips could enhance performance further in high-performance computing environments, offering benefits in multitasking and complex computational tasks.
It’s gossiped that 9000X3D processors will be released in September
