Annabel Neasham comes home from the city for big day out at Hawkesbury

Fresh from Group 1 success in the Doomben Cup on Saturday, the Annabel Neasham stable is gearing up for another big slice of the prize pool at Thursday’s Hawkesbury meeting.

In the midst of a solid run on both sides of the Queensland border, the Neasham camp cashed in on what was a weak Doomben Cup, with tough seven-year-old Bois D’argent, a 25-1 shot, leading all the way.

On the same day at Randwick, emerging filly Aemelius also upset more fancied runners at double figure odds, sweeping home from the back in a two-year-old handicap at just her second start.

The day before, Neasham had collected a double at a low-key meeting at Gatton in Queensland. And the day before that, promising three-year-old Eye Of the Fire was a dominant front-running winner in a Class 1 at Hawkesbury.

Now it’s back to the western fringe of Sydney for a meeting she could well dominate, starting with progressive filly Vivezza, who is likely to jump a hot favourite in the opening Maiden over a mile.

Later, on a track that is likely to reach a Good 4 rating, the stable is confident a return to dry ground can flick the switch on talented filly Cheergal in a Super Maiden Hcp over 1300m.

A daughter of dual Cox Plate winner So You Think, Cheergal dropped out to beat only one home first-up at Kensington when clearly failing to handle a Heavy 9 surface.

But she’s worked well since and her previous trial form suggests a return to firmer ground can bring out the best in her.

The Neasham stable has a big hand in a Class 1 Hcp over 1500m, with both early favourite Mickey’s Medal and imported four-year-old Junebug, who won her maiden at Muswellbrook on Australian debut, both considered leading chances.
