Must read

A month after being sacked by the Parramatta Eels, Brad Arthur could be headed to the English Super League to continue his coaching career.

That is according to News Corp, who report Arthur will be formally interviewed for the head coaching role at Leeds Rhinos on Friday night.

Leeds are on the hunt for a new coach after Rohan Smith — the son of former Eels coach Brian Smith — stepped down from the role on Wednesday.

Arthur is the Eels’ longest-serving NRL coach with 264 games over 11 seasons to his name, including a grand final appearance in 2022.

But he was sensationally sacked the day before his 50th birthday following the team’s 48-16 loss to the Storm at Magic Round — a performance that even he described as “embarrassing.”

The Eels are now in the process of replacing him with Josh Hannay, Jason Ryles and current interim coach Trent Barrett in the mix.

Meanwhile, Arthur is searching for a new job with his manager Chris Orr confirming to News Corp that he is open to moving to the UK.

“Brad is considering all of his options and Super League is certainly of some interest to him, especially a quality organisation like the Leeds Rhinos,” Orr said.

“Brad is a career coach and after 11 years with the Parramatta Eels he has plenty to offer any organisation he joins.

“His experience is extremely valuable, players love playing for him and no-one will ever work harder than Brad Arthur.”

News Corp reports Arthur has also been offered a number of assistant coaching roles both in Australia and overseas. It’s also worth noting an 18th NRL franchise is expected to enter the competition in 2028.

Leeds currently sit seventh (out of 12 teams) on the Super League ladder with just the top six teams going through to play finals.

The club confirmed Smith’s departure on Wednesday via a statement, saying the decision was “agreed by mutual consent” that he “step down with immediate effect.”

Smith arrived to Leeds in 2022 in took the club to the grand final in his first season with the club.

However CEO Gary Hetherington said in the statement “it is fair to say the Rhinos results and performances this season have not met all our expectations to get us back to where we want to be.”
