A commemorative ceremony will be held today to mark one year since WA Police constable Anthony Woods was killed in the line of duty.

The 28-year-old died three days after being pinned under an allegedly stolen car while trying to arrest the driver in the early hours of the morning in Ascot.

His wife and family remained by his bedside as he fought for his life in an induced coma.

WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch reflected on Woods’ mother wishing she could have changed places with her son.

“I was there that night in hospital with the family; something I’ll never get over, and I don’t have anywhere near the grief that the family have,” he told Radio 6PR.

“He was an exceptional officer, an amazing officer – we’re inspired by him, and that’s his legacy.”

Woods was the 88th WA police officer to be killed on duty.

A commemorative ceremony will be held at his station, Belmont Station, and a barbecue area with a plaque in his honour will be unveiled.

The driver of the vehicle, Reagan Chown, 24, has pleaded not guilty to murder.
