The upgraded console still features the same AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor but now has upgraded storage, RAM and battery life. It comes with an updated chassis which allows for better device cooling and connectivity.
The 24 GB RAM allows for more storage on the console as well as the GPU (graphics processing unit), meaning the device overall has better performance when running the next-generation AAA titles.
The ROG Ally X boasts an 80Wh battery, meaning it is double the capacity of the last model, giving users more uninterrupted gaming.
The handheld console weighs 70g more than the previous model, however ASUS has distributed the weight so it is centred where the gamer’s thumb and forefinger grip the device. ASUS says this means it feels lighter than the 678g it weighs, and ensures users are comfortable during gameplay.
The new handheld console was launched off the back of feedback from users of the ROG Ally, and has been built with a 1TB SSD (solid-state drive), an upgrade from the 512GB the original featured. For users, this means they have more room for all their games.
ASUS says the new console was designed so users could better enjoy their gaming experience.
“We’re excited to launch the new ROG Ally X in Australia and New Zealand after receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from users on the ROG Ally last year,” Bradley Howe, head of consumer, Systems Business Group, ASUS Australia, said.
“We have continued to listen to our customers’ feedback, resulting in the new ROG Ally X, which offers great improvements to battery, thermal cooling and storage. We are delighted that this best-in-class handheld console will now be available for individuals looking for a powerful yet portable on-the-go gaming experience.”
The ROG Ally X is still sleek in its design with a brand new black colourway and slightly deeper handles with a more rounded shape offering comfort to the gamer without making the device too thick.
Ergonomics have been front of mind with the new design, with slants to the console’s trigger making them easier to press. Meanwhile, gamers don’t have to worry about accidentally hitting the macro buttons on the back of the console during gameplay, with a smaller button design reducing that problem while also keeping them accessible for the user.
The updated controls on the ROG Ally X also include the joysticks, which are now more durable with stiffer springs. The D-Pad has also been improved with more precise eight-direction input for fighting and retro games.
The console now features two USB-C ports rather than the original XG Mobile port.
The ROG Ally X has new fans that are 23 per cent smaller and 50 per cent thinner to improve airflow in the device.
Two new tunnels in the fan and a third exhaust vent provides 24 per cent more air volume to be pushed through the console which keeps internal components cool as well as the touch screen, ensuring longer-term usage.
The ROG Ally X is now available for pre-order in Australia from the ASUS E-shop and JB Hi-Fi.
It is retailing for $1599 and will hit shelves on July 22.
