Aussies set to shiver as rain, wind, snow sweeps across south-east

Aussies are bracing for a cold weekend with rain, wind and snow set to sweep across the south-east, as Melbourne endures a record icy start to winter.

It was a chilly morning on Friday in most capital cities, with Sydneysiders waking up to a frosty 7.8 C, while Melburnians endured a slightly less frigid 8.2C.

Adelaide shivered through a low of 10.6C, while Perth hit 12C.

Canberra was by far the coldest capital city with a low of -3C, while Hobart had a low of 6.4C.

Brisbane had morning of 13.1C, while Darwin maintained its usual warmer weather with a minimum temperature of 23.9C.

But meteorologists have warned it is only going to get colder this weekend, as a weather system bringing rain and wind tracks towards south-eastern Australia.

The damp conditions will start in Western Australia on Friday, followed by South Australia and Victoria – before the system rolls into NSW on Saturday night and Sunday.

Sky News Meteorologist Rob Sharpe said this means Sydneysiders will see yet another wet weekend.

“Across the south-east it is looking notably chillier… fast-forward to tomorrow, you can see that drop in temperatures and again into NSW on Sunday, colder weather is brewing,” he said during his Friday forecast.

“They’ll be snow with this as well, probably 20cm for most of the ski fields which will be pretty handy there.”

Sharpe revealed Melbourne had seen the coldest minimum temperatures for the month of June since 2006, while tops have remained quite close to average.

Night temperatures in the Victorian capital have sat at a mean low of 6.6C to date.

“Sydney still near normal for its nights which might surprise some people, in terms of days though for NSW it has been colder than usual,” he said.

“But much of the rest of the country has actually been near or above normal in terms of day time tops.”

WA has been warmer than usual throughout the period, with Queensland’s recent wet weather also keeping the nights more balmy, according to Sharpe.

Looking ahead, the Harbour City will see a low of 7C on Saturday followed by 12C on Sunday with a high chance of showers, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Meanwhile in Melbourne, a minimum of 10C and rain is expected on Saturday followed by more wet weather on Sunday with a low of 6C.

Brisbane is set to wake up to 14C on Saturday and 16C on Sunday.

There will be minimum temperatures in Perth of 10C on Saturday and 8C on Sunday.

Adelaide is forecast to see a low of 10 degrees on Saturday, with a very high chance of showers, followed by a start of 6C on Sunday.

Hobart, a minimum of 9C on Saturday and 6C on Sunday, with rain expected both days.

Residents in Canberra will have a frosty start of -1C on Saturday and three degrees on Sunday, with rain forecast on both days.

Darwin is set to see a minimum of 23C on Saturday and Sunday.
