This week marks a historic moment for Australian basketball as the 2006 FIBA World Cup champions become the first team inducted into the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame. Coached by the legendary Jan Stirling, this star-studded team, which featured basketball icons Lauren Jackson AO OLY and Belinda Snell OLY, made history 18 years ago by becoming the first Australian team to win a senior international basketball medal. Their victory against Russia in Brazil is a moment etched in the annals of Australian sporting history.
The induction ceremony will take place at a function in Melbourne on Friday, July 5, ahead of the Opals’ match against China. This game will be the culminating event of the Ford BALLIN’24 festivities at John Cain Arena.
Among the Class of 2024 inductees are NSW juniors Matthew Nielsen, Belinda Snell, and Suzy Batkovic, who will also be celebrated for their outstanding contributions to the sport.
The Australian Basketball Hall of Fame features three divisions – Basketball Australia, NBL, and WNBL – with inductees eligible for recognition in multiple categories.
Matthew Nielsen OLY, a former Boomers captain and NBL championship-winning leader, will be honoured for his remarkable career, both domestically and internationally. His contributions span an impressive tenure throughout Europe and his dedicated service to the national team.
Belinda Snell OLY will enjoy a double celebration, as her pivotal role in the Opals’ 2006 World Cup triumph is commemorated alongside her illustrious career achievements. Snell’s accolades include three Olympic medals, a WNBA title, three WNBL championships, and five European titles.
Suzy Batkovic OLY, a triple Olympic medallist and two-time World Cup representative, also left an indelible mark on the WNBL. Her dominance in the league, underscored by five MVP titles, has led to the award being named in her honour. Batkovic’s career spanned the WNBA and European leagues, solidifying her legacy in international basketball.
All three of these exceptional athletes are already honoured in the Basketball NSW Hall of Fame. Their induction into the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame is a testament to their extraordinary contributions to the sport.
