Her thick knitted cardigans and oversized floral gowns only intensified her creepiness as a stalker.
But now Martha Scott, the middle-aged stalker in Richard Gadd’s Netflix hit Baby Reindeer, has become an unlikely fashion icon as Gen-Zs are reportedly rushing to get their hands on her mismatched wardrobe.
Videos are circulating on TikTok of people recreating her look of maxi skirts, side bags and tight cardigans with the caption: ‘Martha Scott fit check’.
Demand for her outfits has become so high, that websites are putting together lists of where followers can find her dowdy look.
The show’s costume designer, Mekel Bailey, admitted he purposefully found ‘clashes of tones of print’ and outfits which reflect a ‘loss of care’ in how Martha looked but now people are turning to this as a fashion statement.
He scoured London’s charity shops with his style inspiration including the likes of the Scottish singer, Susan Boyle, Heather from EastEnders, Pam Ferris and his old headteacher.
But her mismatched wardrobe has been tracked down by fans who have found items including the purple heart print cardigan she wore when sitting at the bus stop outside Donny’s house for up to 16 hours a day as coming from the brand Papaya for £19.
An oversized striped glittering purple cardigan worn by Martha, played by The Outlaws star Jessica Gunning, is from the Marks and Spencer’s brand, Per Una, and was sold on eBay for £14.95.
An oversized floral shirt from Ann Harvey was sold on eBay for £9.95 and she also wears a floral off-the-shoulder blouse from the fast-fashion brand, NastyGal.
Most items are sold out after there has been a surge of Baby Reindeer fans wanting to get their hands on Martha’s wardrobe.
Baby Reindeer is one of Netflix’s most successful series of all time with almost 60million views in less than a month following its release in April.
It began life as a one-man show by Richard Gadd, 35, at the Edinburgh Fringe, with Gadd using his own real-life stalking experience as the storyline.
He appears as a struggling comedian and bartender stalked by a woman named Martha, who becomes obsessed with him after he serves her a free cup of tea in the pub where he works.
However, fans of the show managed to track down the real-life Martha on social media – a woman named Fiona Harvey – who has admitted she is Martha Scott but insists most of the story is made up.
She has now filed a £131million lawsuit against Netflix for defamation, negligence and privacy violations.
