More than 1000 people responded to the Facebook event organising the heartwarming surprise send-off for Glenn.

“The amazing, lovely and funny man (Glenn) we have all come to love who works the doors at Kmart Green Hills is retiring,” the event post said.

While not all the event respondents made it to the store as Glenn clocked off for the final time, dozens regretfully explained online they would have attended if they could, and many said their kids had even begged to ditch school to be there.

“He’s the funny and chirpy grandpa to all the kids (who visit) Kmart, my little ones especially love him, and my big kids think he’s awesome and has great dad jokes. They wanted to skip school to go to Kmart to see him off,” one person wrote on Facebook.

“He made me smile and laugh on days I was barely holding on. I will miss his smile and his dad jokes. Happy retirement, Glenn,” another wrote.

Glenn walked out of the shopping centre and into retirement with the same friendly smile on his face that brought local customers joy over the years.

“Glenn was always so cheerful and made you feel welcomed and valued. He will be greatly missed,” one community member wrote.

“His joyful outlook was a blessing. What a legend,” another wrote.

“He makes the world a better place just by being in it,” someone else said.

“I am going to miss his jokes and my little one will miss her fist pumps. Congratulations on your retirement, Glenn,” another wrote.

His “dad jokes” were mentioned by many more regulars of the Kmart store — with one even offering an example: “I walked out yesterday with containers and a basket. His comment was so fast and brilliant, ’Now you’re contained, don’t become a head basket’.”

It’s unclear how Glenn will spend his retirement, but the farewell event organiser revealed on Facebook that Glenn enjoyed astrophotography as a hobby.
