The sports world was stunned and saddened on Monday when news broke that Bill Walton passed away following a battle with cancer.
Walton was an eccentric character that radiated positivity and saw basketball, and life in general, in a different light than others. It was that type of creativity that made him a fan favorite broadcaster following his playing career. As Walton gained millions of new fans every time he touched a mic courtside, so did his longtime broadcast partner Dave Pasch.
Dave Pasch’s emotional tributes to friend Bill Walton
Like many, Pasch bid farewell to Walton on Monday, but his tribute hit closer to home than almost anyone else’s. Pasch could barely hold back the tears while speaking on SportsCenter after the news struck.
He then posted a final goodbye on his social media account.
Walton and Pasch developed an undeniable and transcendent chemistry while working for ESPN. They routinely called Pac-12 games together, with Pasch providing the perfect balance for Walton’s vividness.
Walton was a true legend of the game in every regard. He was a simply outstanding player, winning two NCAA Championships and two NBA rings. He was also the NBA MVP in 1978. He followed that up by becoming one of the most memorable basketball commentators ever.
