Emergency crews are battling a massive fire in Brisbane that caused an inner-city to fill with smoke.

Several demountables and shipping containers erupted into flames at the intersection of Wren Street and O’Connell Terrace in Bowen Hills shortly after 8pm on Tuesday.

Motorists made multiple calls to triple-0 after they spotted plumes of smoke billowing from the inner city tunnel bypass.

‘On arrival, several demountables and shipping containers were on fire,’ a Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokesman told Daily Mail Australia.

‘The smoke affected the tunnel as a result.

‘All people at the scene have been accounted for and the fire is under control at this stage.

It’s not known if the RNA showgrounds or the Cross River Rail worksite were affected as the street has been closed by emergency services.

Police were called to the area at 8.10pm.

‘We’re assisting where we can, especially with public safety. The investigation is still ongoing,’ a police spokesman said.

Bowen Hills resident Dan Martin told The Courier Mail he heard ‘a few explosions’ from his apartment.

‘We normally hear a lot of sirens in the area but I had a look out the window and I was like hang on I can see smoke,’ he said.

‘I heard a few explosions, it looks like a decent fire they are trying to get under control.’
