Bryson DeChambeau has been back to his best at Pinehurst No. 2 for this week’s U.S. Open – and it is the LIV Golf star’s bag that has caught the attention of many fans.
Bryson DeChambeau, the LIV Golf star known for his scientific approach to the game, has been turning heads at this week’s U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 with his custom-made equipment.
The former champion is known for donning an iron set where all clubs are the same length, with the club face degree altered to cater to his remarkable swing and ball speed. DeChambeau is in pursuit of his second major title at Pinehurst, sitting three shots clear of Rory McIlroy, Matthieu Pavon and Patrick Cantlay at the top of the leaderboard.
During Friday’s second-round broadcast, a graphic highlighted DeChambeau’s quirky decision to name all of his golf clubs in his bag, each with a special meaning. For instance, his three-iron is named ‘Gamma’ – the third letter in the Greek alphabet.

Further down the bag, DeChambeau’s five-iron is named ‘Azalea’ after his favourite par-five at Augusta National, home of the Masters. His nine-iron pays tribute to Major League Baseball legend Jackie Robinson, named after the Brooklyn Dodgers hitter.
The connection? DeChambeau’s nine-iron was set at 42 degrees, the legendary number of Robinson. However, to the disappointment of golf enthusiasts intrigued by DeChambeau’s naming convention, the former PGA Tour player revealed in a post-round chat with NBC Sports’ Smylie Kaufman that the names were a thing of the past, belonging to his old club setup.
DeChambeau put up a strong fight on the second day of the U.S. Open, ensuring he stayed in contention as Saturday’s third round approached. Following his consecutive under-par rounds in the 60s on Friday, the Crushers GC captain expressed his high spirits ahead of a significant weekend of golf.

“Yeah, if I can get everything going together,” he told reporters. “Kind of like I did yesterday, I felt pretty solid with the putter, putts just probably didn’t go in the way they could have. But if I get both those components – driving, iron play, putting down, even chipping around the greens.”
DeChambeau’s game was perfect on Saturday, as he jumped to the top of the leaderboard. He’s received plenty of support from fans this week and made sure to praise them after his third round. “It was amazing – I can’t thank them enough,” DeCheambeau said.
“It was a blessing. Man, they riled me up. It just gives me a spike in my adrenaline and allows me to focus more on delivering for the fans, for myself and for my family. It just inspires me.”
