Walter Chun was relieved of his duties as head coach of the Cal men’s golf program, athletic director Jim Knowlton announced Tuesday. Chun has served as head coach for the past eight years, and just completed his 27th consecutive season associated with the program.
“We’d like to thank Walter for his contributions to Cal as a head coach, assistant coach and student-athlete,” Knowlton told Cal Athletics. “Walter always represented our department and University in the right way, but we felt it was necessary to move in a different direction at this time.”
The 2017-18 Pac-12 Coach of the Year, Chun is coming off his second NCAA championship appearance with the Bears as a head coach, and his ninth overall. The 2023-24 squad was nationally ranked throughout the spring slate of tournaments and amassed eight top-three finishes, four runner-up finishes and two tournament wins.
As the transition to the ACC begins, Cal Athletics announced that assistant coach Peter Ireland will serve as interim head coach, and that a national search for Chun’s permanent replacement will begin immediately.
