SENTrack’s Cam Luke is predicting Ciaron Maher to make history in this year’s Melbourne Cup.
Luke believes the star trainer will have the most horses by an individual trainer competing in the race that stops the nation.
Bart Cummings currently holds the record with seven runners, however, with the race just under four months away, Maher looks primed to have a huge number of runners contesting the 3200m race.
“I reckon there’s a chance we’re going to see history on the first Tuesday of November,” Luke explained.
“There will always be history considering the Melbourne Cup is our greatest race, but Ciaron Maher might break Bart Cummings’ current record of seven horses in a particular race.
“I’m just going to throw a couple of horses out there, and I know they might not get there as there’s internationals and horses have to get into the race but Berkshire Breeze, Middle Earth, Saint George, Circle Of Fire, Future History, Ashrun, Glory Daze, Another Wil and Sayedaty Sadaty.”
Furthermore, Luke believes Maher will surpass those before him and become the greatest trainer of all-time by 2040.
“We are continually seeing this man break records, he and Chris Waller are by far the two best and biggest trainers who will continue to do astonishing things week in week out,” he said.
“I think come the first Tuesday in November, we may see eight Ciaron Maher runners with one third of the field in the Melbourne Cup.
“This guy is a freak, I’m of the absolute belief that in 2040 we’ll be talking about the greatest horse trainer of all time, and I believe it will be Ciaron Maher.
“Part of that chapter will be the 2024 Melbourne Cup where he had a minimum of eight runners in the Melbourne Cup.”
Team Williams/Hickmott had six runners in the 2013 Cup.
