CENTRAL 3×3 Basketball teams are on a mission to set pace in the 2024 Port Moresby Women’s Basketball League junior competition following their inclusion this season.
On Sunday, Central’s Under-16 girls bagged a 39-6 win over Saints while their U14 boys team owned the courts with a 32-4 win against Exodus.
Assistant coach Ashley Mea said the kids have been consistently going to the Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Centre for matches and such results could boost them to continue give their best.
“Every Sunday morning, it’s a bit of struggle gathering the kids to bring them here in Port Moresby to play, since most of their parents are unemployed. However, they love the sport so much we have to do small sales in the village for bus fare to the city.
“They would go through anything to be here on Sundays.” The team are from Tubusereia in Central, competing under the Lakwaharu Basketball Association which affiliated to the Basketball Federation PNG earlier this year.
“These Sunday matches have proven that the kids are getting better and better each game although there is still lot more to be worked on. We’re hoping we could get a proper trainer to help train the kids to get all the basics right.”
Meanwhile, the current U16 girls’ team is boosted with young Alice Mea who recently represented PNG in the U17 FIBA Oceania championship hosted in Port Moresby last October.
“Most of the young girls have gained confidence from Alice to play but it also came back to team work as they all contributed to get the points for their team and will continue with that team spirit moving forward,” Mea said.
“Overall a good win for the team, we go back home regroup and come back for another game next Sunday.”
