On July 10, Samsung is expected to announce its upcoming sixth-generation foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold6 and the Galaxy Z Flip6, at its annual Unpacked event.
Now, a patent application from the company has been revealed, which hints that they have started working on designing foldables and rollable foldables that stand out from the competition.
This application indicates a display technology that will allow the user to unlock the phone by touching any part of the screen, rather than a specific area.
The abstract pulled from the application states the display will come with “a fingerprint recognition sensor layer under the display panel.”
The purpose of the technology would be “integrating a fingerprint recognition sensor into the display panel, which is the component that occupies the largest area in a portable information communication device,” according to the application.
Samsung’s goal is to develop a display, which will implement fingerprint recognition sensors without a separate external light source.
It’s claimed that this will also offer improved fingerprint recognition characteristics.
The more expensive foldables currently offered by Samsung come with side-mounted finger sensors.
There’s talk this could be replaced with the full-screen, under-display fingerprint scanner soon.
Tipsters believe this technology could begin to appear in Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 and rollable devices.
One main reason to use a side-mounted fingerprint sensor on a foldable phone is to reduce the thickness.
