A child has been killed and 10 other people injured after in a horrific car accident in the Northern Territory.
On Sunday, just before 11am, a Toyota Prado with 11 passengers crashed on Mardiyardu Road, located between the northern towns of Kalkarindji and Lajamanu.
The car was driven back to Kalkarindji, where a CareFlight team was waiting to provide assistance, as reported by the Northern Territory Police.
The eight-year-old child was declared dead shortly after.
A 29-year-old woman was allegedly driving the car when it crashed. She, along with nine other people, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Detective Senior Sergeant Richard Musgrave said the crash allegedly involved alcohol.
‘Communications from the scene was limited due to the remote location of the crash, and Major Crash Investigators are currently on-site at both scenes,’ he said on Monday.
‘This is a complex crash involving alcohol and a large number of unrestrained passengers that has tragically resulted in the death of a young child.’
‘Local police are providing support to the families and local communities affected.’
Officers have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash and have urged anyone with information to contact police.
