Chris Minns moves to suspend CFMEU from NSW Labor Party

Must read

NSW Premier Chris Minns has taken steps to suspend the CFMEU from the Labor Party following claims of alleged bribery.

The premier has written to the party’s general secretary and asked they suspend the union’s construction and general division’s affiliation and cease any further donations or affiliation fees.

“The revelations that have come to light this morning are appalling,” he said in a joint statement with NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey on Wednesday.

“There is absolutely no tolerance for criminal or corrupt behaviour in the building industry, in unions or anywhere for that matter.”

NSW Labor sought to distance itself from the CFMEU after Nine newspapers reported allegations that underworld figures infiltrated the union’s Victorian branch.

On Monday, the premier called on the union’s state secretary, Darren Greenfield, to stand down while he faced charges for allegedly receiving bribes in 2021.

Mr Minns and Mr Mookhey said the state government would ask the commonwealth to review enterprise bargaining agreements in NSW which the CFMEU was party to.

The NSW Construction Compliance Unit will also work with federal regulatory bodies and act on any allegations.

“We must take the necessary action to protect honest and hardworking construction workers and union members,” the premier and treasurer said.

“It is necessary to protect the integrity of the construction sector and unions in NSW.”
