Concerns raised about data privacy with online therapy on the rise – ABC listen

Many people are now turning to online therapy, but there are increasing concerns about what these online providers might be doing with our data. 

Last year the US Federal Trade Commission levied a $11.7 million fine on one of these companies – BetterHelp – after it revealed it had shared customers’ email addresses, IP addresses and answers to personal health questions with social media companies, despite promising to keep the data private. 

So what else is needed to ensure valuable health data is kept safe?
