The account ensures cross-play and cross-progression.
Concord will require a PlayStation Network (PSN) account on PC, it’s been confirmed. What’s more, that PSN will be “important” when it comes to both cross-play and cross-progression.
Speaking with Eurogamer, Firewalk Studios’ Kim Kreines and Jon Weisnewski explained why.
“[The PSN account requirement] allows us to have cross play, that cross progression, that’s that’s an important piece of it,” began Kreines, a director on Concord.
Lead character designer Weisnewski added that “goal is for players to come together. And so for us to have PC players and PlayStation 5 players together, for that cross-play and cross-progression to work, that’s a layer that needs to be there – just on a technical level. So the goal is we want to get players together, to have fun and play together, this is part of that experience.”
The requirement for Concord comes after a similar requirement was added, after launch, into Helldivers 2. The requirement meant that that the title was pulled from over 175 countries, before Sony ultimately backflipped on the decision. Today, it’s reported that Helldivers 2 has lost approximately 90% of its player base on PC in just five months.
Critics have noted that Destiny 2 — a title developed by Sony-owned studio Bungie — offers cross-play and cross-progression functionality that’s not directly tied into a PlayStation Network account.
Expect Concord on PS5 and Windows PC from 23 August. A beta will be offered ahead of that time for those who pre-order.
