An Australian TikToker found herself in a hilarious situation after she stumbled into an unexpected encounter with Oscar Award-winning director Baz Luhrmann.
Comedian Georgia Godworth was conducting street interviews in Newtown, Sydney when the 61-year-old filmmaker casually strolled past sporting a green leather jacket and denim jeans.
However, Ms Godworth was oblivious to the fact the man in the shiny jacket was not a Newtown local but a world-famous Hollywood director.
In the video, Luhrmann seemed to assume he was being recognised as he grabbed the camera, held it up in the air and suggested: “I think you need to put the camera here.”
Then, as Ms Godworth asked, “so, are you single?” it dawned on Luhrmann the woman had no clue who he was.
With a momentary pause, he responded, “no… uh, I’m married,” as he stared into the sky in a confused manner.
Luhrmann has been married to Academy Award-winning costume designer Catherine Martin for 27 years.
The unlikely duo then proceeded with a cringeworthy two-minute exchange where Ms Godworth delved into Luhrmann and Martin’s personal lives, both parties visibly confused.
Despite the awkwardness, Luhrmann gracefully fielded the unexpected questions with a mix of patience and occasional amusement.
Upon realising her faux pas after uploading the video to TikTok, Ms Godworth expressed her embarrassment and admitted: “Guys I had no idea this was Baz Luhrmann”.
The Sydney-born director, known for blockbuster hits including Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet, The Great Gatsby, and Elvis, has amassed more than $1 billion in worldwide box office revenue.
During their peculiar exchange, Luhrmann shared previously unknown reflections on love and marriage as he spoke of his relationship with Martin.
“During that journey of marriage, the person I’m married to and I found our own really genuine, authentic concept of what our contract to each other should be,” Luhrmann said.
“But I think more importantly, marriage is not so much about what exists between you and another person, it’s about advertising to other people that you love and care as to what the dealio is.”
Ms Godworth sarcastically remarked: “That’s it. I hear you. Love and respect ay?”
“Well, love and respect but also obviously you need to bring other people into your arrangement,” Luhrmann said.
“My own general philosophy is, if you care about someone but they fall in love with someone else or they like someone, there has to be some degree of acceptance.”
The street interviewer repeatedly butts in and in response to Luhrmann referencing “a contract of communication”, she said, “It’s a loose contract where you can f*** other people.”
“Let me think about that. I’m not sure what that means,” he answered as he stared into the sky again.
Slightly taken aback by the influencer pressing him about “threesomes, foursomes and orgies” Luhrmann asked her to answer her own question before quipping: “What is the point of the conversation we’re having?”
She answered “just talking about dating” to which Luhrmann generously provided a background into his history and explained “what I do is not a job” while Ms Godworth looked bewildered.
The interview was brought to a close and Luhrmann joked: “I usually don’t do interviews but, you know what, happy to be a part of yours.”
Ms Godworth, who at the time had no idea Luhrmann was one of the most highly sought after directors, sarcastically replied “I’m honoured, I’m honoured” as she twirled off the scene.
Commentators online have roasted the social media personality and said: “I feel like you shouldn’t work in media if you don’t know who Baz Luhrmann is. An insult to this genius.”
Godworth good-naturedly replied: “I don’t work in media. I do know who he is I just never knew what he looked like! He is a genius!”
Another user said: “He just gave us SO MUCH DETAIL and answered SO MANY of our unanswered questions”
“Girl, you’re lucky to interview the great Baz Luhrmann!!” a comment read.
“‘Okay … What is the point of the conversation we’re having?’ is everything to me,” one wrote about Luhrmann’s confused question.
