Cristian Romero has stated that he is not thinking about leaving Tottenham Hotspur and believes he has enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career under Ange Postecoglou.
The 26-year-old World Cup winner was named as one of Postecoglou’s vice-captains at the start of the season and responded with one of his most consistent campaigns since arriving at the club from Atalanta in 2021. Romero played 34 times for Spurs over the campaign, scoring five times from the back and picked up just one suspension – three games for a red card against Chelsea – and only missed two Premier League games through injury.
The Argentine was a guest on DSports’ Cómo Te Va and his interview was reported on by Olé in which the Argentina international admitted he is not thinking about leaving the club despite the odd transfer link away.
“The truth is that I’m fine. For now I’m not thinking about that [a transfer], I’m thinking about preparing myself these days to get to the national team in the best way possible, which is the next step I have,” he said. “The things that come up at the moment are obviously always analysed but I’m not thinking about the future, I’m thinking about the national team. Now that I have the Copa America, I will always try to take the national team to the top and then we will see what happens.”
Romero, who has three years left on his contract, said he is loving life at the club and had praise for Postecoglou’s impact and progress made in his first season at Tottenham even if the group did not quite meet the expectations they had set for themselves in finishing fifth.
“I’m very happy to be in this present, even though group achievements haven’t been the best or we didn’t expect to end like this, but also, at the group level for the coach’s first year, he has been good in all lines,” he said. “We have to keep wanting more. Individually, I’m very happy for this beautiful season that I’ve had.”

The defender admitted that after a tough couple of campaigns, this one under the Australian has been his best so far and one of the best of his career.
“I think I’ve gone from lowest to highest. Having gone to the Premier League has already been a very important achievement for me because I knew I could grow a lot,” he said. “The first season I had ups and downs, injuries, the adaptation wasn’t easy. The second I adapted and I think this, which was the third, was one of my best seasons I’ve ever done.”
Postecoglou has previously told football.london that Romero’s desire to play at the Olympics would be decided by the club and that he would personally hope the player would concentrate on what he believes will be a big season ahead for the club. With the experienced Nicolás Otamendi set to be one of the over-age players in the team that will go to the Olympic Games, more spotlight has been placed on those others wanting to go to the event this summer, which comes after the Copa America, but Romero agreed that it is Tottenham and the clubs who will have the final say.
“Being the national team, one always wants to be there, but the final decision rests with the clubs in this case,” he said. “On our part, everyone wanted to go, but not all the clubs thought of giving in. That Otamendi goes is important for the little ones, he is a reference.”
