De Koning, Daicos, Bontempelli and more: The 10 best rated games of 2024 so far

Must read

The official Champion Data Player Ratings attempt to measure impact above all else.

While some systems favour players that win a lot of possessions, the Player Ratings consider how players win the footy, where on the ground they win the ball and how they use it by hand and foot.

As well as overall impact per possession, the Player Ratings tend to favour those who are accurate in front of goal while judging inaccurate players harshly.

The average rating per game is around 9.0 points, while Marcus Bontempelli, who leads the ratings on average in 2024, rakes in a huge 21.10 points per game ahead of Isaac Heeney (20.38) and Nick Daicos (18.90). Every other player in the AFL averages 18 or below.

With that in mind, we’ve gone back through the top 10 rated individual games through 15 rounds this year, with all of them pulling in more than 29 points.

Check out the top 10 so far below.

1 – Tom De Koning (Carlton) – Round 15 v Geelong, MCG

Rating points: 35.5

Statistics: 25 disposals, 34 hit-outs, 10 score involvements, one goal, seven clearances, four marks and seven inside 50s in a 63-point win.

A ridiculous stat line for a ruckman and clearly the best individual game of the year as a result on the ratings system.

2 – Nick Daicos (Collingwood) – Round 12 v Western Bulldogs, Marvel Stadium

Rating points: 32.2

Statistics: 32 disposals, 16 clearances, 27 contested possessions, eight inside 50s, two goals, eight score involvements in an 18-point loss.

Playing a lone hand in Collingwood’s midfield, Daicos set a club record for clearances and tried to will his side over the line. Unfortunately, the Pies were bested late by a huge Marcus Bontempelli game.

3 – Marcus Bontempelli (Western Bulldogs) – Round 8 v Hawthorn, Marvel Stadium

Rating points: 31.9

Statistics: 26 disposals, 16 contested possessions, seven clearances, two goals, four goal assists, 11 score involvements in a seven-point loss.

Not his biggest game from a prolific numbers point of view, but Bontempelli did all he could to will his side over the line from an attacking perspective.

4 – Chad Warner (Sydney) – Round 10 v Carlton, SCG

Rating points: 31.2

Statistics: 28 disposals, five inside 50s, three goals, 14 score involvements, three goal assists in a 52-point win.

The star player in a battle between first and second. Warner had the ultimate attacking game from a midfielder’s perspective.

5 – Noah Anderson (Gold Coast) – Round 10 v Geelong, Darwin

Rating points: 30.7

Statistics: 42 disposals at 88.1 per cent efficiency, two goals, 15 score involvements and four clearances in a 64-point win.

Absolutely prolific and used the footy incredibly well as the Suns ran rampant in Darwin.

6 – Luke Jackson (Fremantle) – Round 2 v North Melbourne, Marvel Stadium

Rating points: 30.6

Statistics: 24 disposals at 95.8 per cent efficiency, seven clearances, two goals, 10 score involvements and 21 hit-outs in a 26-point win.

Dominant in the number one ruck role with Sean Darcy out of the side. Was everywhere in the air and operated as an extra midfielder.

7 – Patrick Cripps (Carlton) – Round 6 v GWS, Marvel Stadium

Rating points: 30.3

Statistics: 39 disposals, 13 clearances, 24 contested possessions, one goal, 11 score involvements in a 19-point win.

Went head-to-head with Tom Green and showed him who was boss. An awesome midfield bull performance.

8 – James Worpel (Hawthorn) – Round 3 v Geelong, MCG

Rating points: 29.9

Statistics: 36 disposals, nine inside 50s, six clearances, one goal, eight score involvements in a 36-point loss.

Worpel started the season on fire as the rest of his teammates struggled and this was his best performance of the lot.

9 – Jordan Dawson (Adelaide) – Round 11 v West Coast, Adelaide Oval

Rating points: 29.4

Statistics: 32 disposals, nine inside 50s, two goals, 11 score involvements and nine marks in a 99-point win.

The Crows ran rampant against the Eagles and Dawson was clearly the most influential player on the ground.

10 – Isaac Heeney – Round 4 v West Coast, Adelaide Hills

Rating points: 29.3

Statistics: 26 disposals at 92.3 per cent efficiency, seven clearances, two goals, 10 score involvements.

The best statistical game of Heeney’s season, but the scary thing is that it’s just about been his average performance all year.

10 – Blake Hardwick – Round 10 v Port Adelaide, Adelaide Oval

Rating points: 29.3

Statistics: 23 disposals, five goals, nine score involvements, six marks, two goal assists in a one-point loss.

Hardwick started on fire up forward for the Hawks and was sent back late as they tried to save the game which they just couldn’t get over the line in.
