Bengaluru: With the resignation of the entire managing committee of the Bangalore Turf Club (BTC) — led by Aravind Raghavan, the decks have been cleared for the resumption of racing here. Racing — and off-course betting — had come to a standstill since April after the state government denied BTC the licence to commence the summer season.The club has been at loggerheads with the state government since the start of the year following a raid on bookmakers. The authorities in the chargesheet had cited tax evasion, illegal collection of betting amounts and corruption. The matter was handed over to the Central Crime Branch (CCB) for investigation.The Karnataka Trainers Association (KTA) and Karnataka Racehorse Owners Association (KROA) filed petitions in High Court highlighting the impact on livelihood of hundreds of people. Although last month the HC had given temporary relief, the government had it overturned.Two stewards and two committee members had resigned recently, the others followed on Monday.
Eswaran named interim chairmanFormer BTC chairman K Uday Eswaran was named the interim chairman at the meeting on Monday. Government nominee LK Atheeq called the meeting in which Eswaran, KA Jagadish and Dr Raghunath were roped in as interim stewards with Chaduranga Kantharaj Urs co-opted to the committee. Eswaran told TOI that BTC would apply for the licence on Tuesday and is confident of being granted the same since all the government prerequisites have been fulfilled. A truncated summer season is on the cards and is likely to begin next weekend.
