More than 24 years after the cricket match-fixing scandal shook the sport, a court in Delhi has charged four people, including Sanjeev Chawla, a London-based bookie considered the main conspirator and actor Krishan Kumar, brother of T-Series founder Gulshan Kumar, with cheating and criminal conspiracy.
The 68-page order by the Patiala House district court, allows the trial to begin and details the roles of Chawla, Kumar, Delhi bookie Rajesh Kalra and Sunil Dara (also known as Bittoo). The Delhi Police filed charges in 2013 related to the 2000 scandal involving late South African captain Hansie Cronje, who died in a plane crash in 2002. Chawla was extradited to India
The court noted that Chawla played a key role in connecting bookies with Cronje to fix matches. It dismissed arguments questioning Chawla’s identity, pointing out his long escape from justice.
