As a Software Engineer for the ABC Media Platform team, Adi contributes to the delivery of content for one of Australia’s most highly regarded video-on-demand platforms – ABC iview.
How did you come to work at the ABC?
I started at the ABC nearly seven years ago through the 2016 Women in Broadcast Technology Scholarship during my final year of university. The scholarship provided a three-month internship in iOS development, where I worked on the ABC Kids app. Upon completing my internship, it was extended, allowing me to explore various areas of development work. My next assignment focused on the backend of ABC iview. After just a week with the team, I realised that backend engineering was my true calling. I was captivated by the complexity and intricacy required to keep iview running smoothly. Over the years, we have added so many features, and I am incredibly grateful to have been a part of this journey.
The most rewarding part of your work is…
The most rewarding part of my work has been watching my daughter use the product I help build. I’ve watched her grow and use the ABC4Kids and ABC ME apps, and now ABC iview. I love it when her friends come over and ask me if I can add more Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles episodes. Working on a product that has been used in my home for many years just makes working that bit more personal. Even on days when I am struggling and don’t feel like working, I just remember what I’m working on, and who for, and it gives me the push I need.
What are your reflections on careers for women and non-binary folks in technology or STEM-related fields?
When I first started at the ABC, there weren’t many women in engineering, I could probably count them all on my two hands. A lot has changed since and now it feels almost equal. I’ve also met a lot of women outside of work who feel the same. I see significant progress.
There are more opportunities and support systems available now than before. Initiatives like scholarships, mentorship programs, and advocacy groups promoting diversity and inclusion have helped, but there’s still much work to be done. Gender bias, lack of representation, and unequal opportunities continue to be prevalent issues.
It’s essential for organisations to actively foster inclusive environments where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute. This includes addressing unconscious biases, promoting diverse hiring practices, and creating pathways for career advancement. I also believe in transparency, and the visibility of successful women and non-binary professionals in STEM is important for inspiring the next generations to select this as a career. It’s important to have open conversations, share our experiences and challenges, mentor others and advocate for change.
What do you love about working in the media industry?
I love the fast-paced nature of the media and the fact that our products are in use 24/7. This constant engagement means that every day brings new challenges and opportunities – no two days are ever the same. Knowing that people depend on our services for information and that we have a responsibility to have that available to them in real time gives me a feeling similar to an adrenaline rush. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that we are the go-to source for many when they seek information, whether it’s breaking news, insightful analysis, or just to unwind and be entertained.
What were your initial experiences of ABC Digital Product culture and community like and how has it changed?
From the very beginning, I fell in love with the culture at ABC. It has genuinely allowed me to be myself and have fun while working. When everyone was in the office pre-COVID, we had a ton of events that made our workplace feel special. From beer brewing competitions (some of it was beer, others not so sure), turning our office space into a gingerbread house for Christmas (we ate the walls….no we didn’t! Or did we??), Mario Kart competitions, RuPaul’s Drag race sweepstakes (sashay away), and of course chicken nugget tastings. Even during the shift to remote work due to COVID-19, the spirit and culture on my team remained strong. We managed to find fun ways to connect like ABC Cribs where we take our team around our house over zoom and band t-shirt Fridays.
The culture at the ABC is not just about having fun; it’s about creating a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and can contribute authentically. This supportive atmosphere has been instrumental in my professional growth and has made my experience at ABC incredibly fulfilling and enjoyable.
