England fast bowler Brydon Carse has been suspended from all forms of cricket for three months after being found guilty of betting on cricket matches, in violation of the regulations that forbid players from gambling. This suspension has dashed Carse’s hopes of making his Test debut for England this summer. He was a contender for selection in the squad for the West Indies series.
It is believed that Carse did not participate in any of the matches he bet on. The games on which the fast bowler placed bets occurred over five years ago. Between 2017 and 2019, Carse reportedly made 303 bets on various matches. In addition to his current suspension, he received a suspended 13-month ban, which will remain in effect for two years. Carse’s suspension will last from May 28 to August 28.
“We take these matters extremely seriously and do not condone any form of anti-corruption breach in cricket. We support the Cricket Regulator’s decision and their consideration of the mitigating factors in Brydon’s case. He has co-operated and shown remorse for his actions. We are satisfied that Brydon has shown growth in the five years since this breach and has demonstrated a greater understanding of his responsibilities. We are hopeful that his case can serve as an educational example for other cricketers,” ECB said in a statement.
Carse stated that he would fully accept responsibility for his actions and expressed gratitude to the ECB, Durham Cricket, and PCA for their support.
“Whilst these bets were several years ago, that is no excuse and I take full responsibility for my actions. I would like to thank the ECB, Durham Cricket and the PCA for their support during this difficult time for me. I will be working hard in the next 12 weeks to ensure that I repay that support on the field when I am able to return to playing”, the pacer told.
To date, Carse has appeared in 14 ODIs and 3 T20Is for England in his career.
