“The was also another woman in the dwelling and she was unharmed,” Detective Acting Superintendent Craig Williams said on Monday.

“So far, the investigation has revealed the male was the son of the unharmed woman … and the deceased female was his aunty.

“The 88-year-old female is assisting police with their inquiries.

“This is a tragic incident and we are assisting the family to the best of our ability.”

Williams confirmed claims by a neighbour that police had been called to the property multiple times in the previous week.

“There were some police cars back and forth, and then there was an ambulance, so we knew something was happening,” the neighbour said.

“I mean, she was elderly so we kind of thought, having the ambulance, something might have happened, but we didn’t really blink an eye too much.”

Williams said it would be “inappropriate” to comment on “what happened during those (police) inquiries”.

And he would not say who had called police, other than to confirm the calls came from the home.

“We had spoken to a number of the parties a number of times,” he said.

He also declined to comment on why the man was allowed to have a gun despite the police call-outs to the premises.

“We’re conducting inquiries with the family and all witnesses,” Williams said.

“We would ask any witnesses who may have information of this matter to come forward to police.”

He said there had not been a recorded history of domestic violence between the man and the two women.
