Emerging stable takes over iconic Lindsay Park property

It has a storied history preparing champions of the turf, and Angaston Park, the former Lindsay Park property, will now be operated by the emerging Aaron Bain Racing.

Located in Angaston in the Barossa Valley, the world class facility rose to prominence under legendary horseman Colin Hayes, who established Lindsay Park Racing and trained over 5000 winners during a 43-year career, including Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Golden Slipper successes.

The property, originally known as Raceside, also became home to influential stallions including Without Fear, Zabeel, At Talaq, Jeune and Rory’s Jester.

The property later changed hands to be managed by Tony McEvoy, where it was renamed Kildalton Park, after being purchased by businessman Wayne Mitchell.

Bain and co-trainer Ned Taylor will take the reins of Angaston Park on July 1, and Bain believes it is a great opportunity for the growing stable.

“Our thoroughbred operation has been growing significantly in the past 12 months, and with further growth anticipated, it is a wonderful opportunity for our business, horses and owners,” Bain said.

“There is the opportunity to have up to 70 horses in training and ultimately, we will have a focus on continuing to improve the quality of horses in the stable and success for our owners.”

Bain and Taylor, who currently train at Gawler, will keep their on-course training barn in action despite the move to Angaston Park.

The stable is enjoying a career-best 22-win season in 2023-24, including eight metro wins, and recently saddled up their first Group 1 runner, Rubamos, in the $1 million The Goodwood (1200m) in May.

“On the back of a game-changing Adelaide Carnival by Racing SA, SAJC and Sportsbet, along with the much-needed government support for racing in this state which has all combined to see increased prizemoney opportunities, now is a perfect time to strengthen our brand and position in racing in this state,” Bain said.

“Mr Mitchell, with a clear passion for the property and an avid supporter for racing, has done a magnificent job in the recent refurbishments and upgrades to the training facility, and we are excited by the opportunity that has presented itself to our business, our owners, current and perspective.”

Bain is hoping his stable can continue to further the legacy of Angaston Park in South Australian racing.

“There is no more influential figure in South Australian racing then the great Colin Hayes who firmly believed ‘the future belongs to those who plan for it’ and we are excited to take Aaron Bain Racing to the next level at Angaston Park,” Bain added.

“There have been many winners, and champions of the turf prepared out of the historic property over many decades, and we are looking forward to building on that.”
