Joe Burns has created history for Italy, becoming just the sixth player to score a century for two different countries in international cricket.

The 34-year-old, who recently made the decision to pledge his allegiance to the Azzuri to honour his late brother, blasted an unbeaten 108 from 55 balls against Romania.

Burns helped his side move one step closer to qualifying for the next T20 World Cup in 2026 as they topped the Europe Qualifier Group A standings after four-straight wins.

The right-handed opener blasted 12 fours and four sixes on his way to triple-figures, with Italy posting a mammoth total of 4-244 from their allotted 20 overs, with Sydney grade cricket batter Justin Mosca (72 off 30) providing plenty of support.

Romania proved no match for their opponents and were bowled out for just 74.

The century from Burns sees him join a rare club that also includes Eoin Morgan and Kepler Wessels, who both scored hundreds for two different countries.

Burns made the decision to give up his dream of playing for Australia again earlier this year, posting an emotional message on social media explaining his call.

“The days, weeks and months since my brother’s death have been the toughest I could ever imagine,” he said via Instagram.

“I know this shirt will carry on his spirit and give me strength. It’s the hours playing as kids and connection with him that taught me to love this game. I’m so proud to represent Italy on our path to the 2026 World Cup.

“The fields of Rome may be a long way from the Gabba, MCG or our front yard growing up, but I feel like I’m coming home.”

Burns played 23 Tests for Australia during his career, as well as six one-day internationals in the green and gold kit.
