A search for a man missing in a waterway for several hours after the boat he was on capsized has been called off for the night.

A rescue operation was launched for a 23-year-old man who disappeared after the boat he was on sank in the Swansea Channel, south of Newcastle, in New South Wales, just before 8pm on Saturday.

Three other men on board the vessel, two aged 23 and one aged 20, were able to swim to land.

It’s understood the boat hit an object, throwing those on board into the ocean, before it overturned.

Emergency crews called off the search for the night at about 10.30pm and teams will resume on Sunday morning.

The 23-year-old driver of the boat was taken by police for mandatory testing.

The other 23-year-old was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital for further treatment for hypothermia.
