Figure pulling strings in Tiger teen circus; Roosters’ shock $800k Smith move: Jimmy Brings

Must read

Wests Tigers teenager Lachlan Galvin seems like a great young bloke from a thoroughly decent family.

Which is why it’s so bizarre to see the agitation and the attempted manipulation around the rookie requesting an immediate release.

Galvin has played 10 NRL games this season and has a contract with Wests Tigers until the end of 2026.

Low and behold the agent puppeteering the strings on the Galvin situation is none other than Isaac Moses.

This is the same Isaac Moses who was involved when his cousin Mitchell demanded an immediate release to move to the Parramatta Eels.

The same year Moses also moved James Tedesco to the Sydney Roosters and Aaron Woods to the Bulldogs.

All three players – like Galvin – were local Wests Tigers juniors.

For unknown reasons Moses has now apparently thrown his toys out of the cot about Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall.

This is not unusual given Moses has a penchant for fallouts with some of the biggest and most influential figures in the game.

Nick Politis, Phil Gould and Ricky Stuart all point blank refuse to deal with him.

Galvin originally set for back row? | 00:50

Good on Wests Tigers CEO Shane Richardson for having the cojones to reject the release request.

The mail is Richardson will meet Galvin’s parents this week to explain the Wests Tigers reasoning and outline the club’s plan moving forward.

And spare us the fluffy cupcake fairytales about the Wests Tigers refusing to provide him with a direct pathway into the NRL.

We can’t think of too many other NRL coaches who would have selected the 18-year-old in the no.6 jumper for the start of the season.

The only two games Galvin’s missed is when he was suspended for a hip drop tackle at the conclusion of round three.

He’s then been rested this week which was always planned as he recovers from a broken hand.

The Wests Tigers met Moses last Friday and offered an upgrade and an extension on Galvin’s current deal.

Moses immediately rejected it and then the circus began to unfold off the back of it.

Like we said at the start Galvin seems like a great young bloke from a good family.

But there are no winners when agents try to agitate with players under contract.

It’s also interesting to note NRL CEO Andrew Abdo has weighed in on the issue warning rules are rules around players under contract.

MANLY FAVOURITE LANDS NEW DEAL

Manly cult figure Nathan Brown has been rewarded with a new two-year deal at the Sea Eagles until the end of 2026.

It’s a win for the maroon and white faithful who love the way Brown has become a hit for literally coming off the back fence for kick off runs at Brookvale Oval.

Credit to Brown who has had to do it the hard way after starting the year on a train and trial contract with the Sea Eagles after playing 10 games with the Sydney Roosters last season.

Look for Brown charging hard at Four Pines Park on Sunday when the Sea Eagles host the in-form St George Illawarra.

WILL BARRETT LAND THE PARRA JOB?

There’s talk ex-NSW and Australian playmaker Trent Barrett is firming for the vacant Parramatta Eels coaching gig.

The banker and the bean counter in charge at the Eels are still busily working on the interview process of who becomes Parramatta’s next head coach.

It was interesting to hear from Eels prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard on Wednesday who seemed the sum up the view of most when he said hopefully the Eels hierarchy can make a decision sooner rather than later.

Barrett enjoys strong support amongst the current playing group having spent the past 18 months working alongside Brad Arthur before taking over as interim coach last month.

ROOSTERS SET FOR SHOCK $800K SMITH MOVE

The Sydney Roosters are expected to put the for sale sign up on the hectic cheese Brandon Smith at the end of the season.

The Roosters rarely get it wrong in the recruitment and retention space but the way things are tracking of late they’ve clearly made some mistakes.

The recruitment of Smith is one, Matt Lodge is another player who was only there short-term and Dragons halfback Kyle Flanagan lasted one season of a three year deal.

Smith, 28, took up an option in his contract to remain at the Roosters in 2025 earlier this year but the way it’s headed there’s every chance the Tricolours may opt to make a tough decision.

We’ve even heard the Roosters could even be prepared to chip in a significant amount of his $800,000 contract.

At his best Smith is still a damn good player but watching the Roosters senior players talk about him being issued with a breach notice this week it’s clear most at the club are running out of patience.

The Roosters still firmly believe they’re a damn good chance of winning a premiership this season and need all players in the top 30 completely invested.

The Cheese is one of the great characters of the game and at the Melbourne Storm was a crucial element of the club winning the 2020 premiership.

The Roosters are hoping issuing him with a breach notice for missing a team meeting will ignite a fire inside the Kiwi Test player.
