Kane Cornes and David King are both in full agreement that the AFL needs to introduce a mid-season trade period and give teams more flexibility to improve their list or add draft pick assets during the year.
The pair came up with five players who could have potentially moved this year as examples of how it could shake up the season.
“We’ve got to be brave with it. No restrictions,” Cornes said.
“We’ve got list managers who can’t do anything until October. It’s ridiculous,” King added.
“People say whatever your list is coming to the season is just your lot. I don’t agree with that logic.
“Why put restrictions on teams getting better to win that year’s flag.”
Rory Lobb
Cornes: “Would he be the perfect mid-season trade? Like, someone would overpay for him. Be that Collingwood, be that a team that can win the flag that’s been smacked by injury, they would give the Bulldogs more than what you could usually get for Rory Lobb.”
“He’s not going to be there at the end of the year, they could maximise his value right now.”
Marc Pittonet
Cornes: “Could Geelong come with a ridiculous offer for Marc Pittonet to lead their ruck stocks?”
Tom Barrass
King: “Sydney missed out on Tom Barrass in the trade period for whatever reason. What if they went again now? There’s only really one spot in their line-up that you could put question marks on and it’s full back with the doubts over Tom McCartin.”
“You’d want to bolster that now in case something happens in Round 20.”
Luke Parker
Cornes: “What would a club give for Luke Parker? Would Sydney look at that? Get a draft pick in for Parker and free up some salary cap room?”
Liam Baker
Cornes: “What would Freo give up for Liam Baker right now? Richmond needs to rebuild and if they think he’s gone, would you look at it?”
“I think there’s opportunities for clubs to fill a hole and help their chances to win a premiership, or if you’re no shot and you want to rebuild, can you maximise the opportunity that you’ve got to trade someone out.”
