Iowa’s Molly Davis upbeat as she tries to return in NCAA Tournament
Davis injured her knee three weeks ago and goes through some of her process in getting back onto the court (hopefully).
Molly Davis has found her next basketball home.
The former Iowa women’s basketball fan favorite has been named a graduate assistant at the University of Evansville, the school announced Wednesday afternoon. She’ll join Robyn Scherr-Wells’s women’s basketball staff after playing two seasons at Iowa and three at Central Michigan.
“I have had the pleasure of watching Molly play basketball since she was a freshman in high school. The thing that has always stood out to me about Molly is the joy that she plays with. Molly loves the game,” Scherr-Wells said in a school release. “When her coaches at Iowa reached out to me about Molly’s interest in our graduate assistant position, I knew right away she would be a great fit. She has a high basketball IQ and is a hard worker.”
After three years at Central Michigan, where Davis averaged at least 14 points per game each season, Davis transferred to Iowa ahead of the 2022-23 campaign. She quickly became a pivotal piece of the Hawkeyes’ success.
Her biggest role arrived last season when Davis started 27 games, averaging 5.9 points, three assists and 2.5 rebounds per game. “The Headband”, as she was affectionally dubbed by Iowa fans, soon became one of the most popular players on the team.
That only increased after Davis suffered a gruesome knee injury in Iowa’s regular-season finale against Ohio State on Senior Day. Although Davis ultimately didn’t play again until a late cameo in the national championship game against South Carolina, supporters everywhere rallied around her presence amid Iowa’s magical run in March.
“Molly is a winner and has been a part of many successful teams. She will be a tremendous asset to our players in helping them understand all of the things that go into building a championship program. She has a bright future in coaching and I am excited for the opportunity to mentor her in her first coaching role!”
