New Zealand quick Lockie Ferguson on Monday created history as he bowled the most economical spell in T20 cricket’s history. Bowling his four overs quota in New Zealand’s final group stage game against Papua New Guinea (PNG), Ferguson didn’t give away a single run and snapped three wickets. Ferguson becomes just the 2nd bowler after Saad Bin Zafar to not concede a run in T20Is.
The spell also went a long way in helping New Zealand end their World Cup campaign on a high with a 7-wicket win over PNG.

Ferguson claimed the wickets of PNG skipper Assad Vala, Charles Amini and Chad Soper, bowling four maiden overs as New Zealand restricted PNG for 78 runs in 19.4 overs.
In the shortest format World Cup, the previous best spell was bowled by the national teammate Tim Southee, who had conceded only four runs in New Zealand’s previous game against Uganda.

Earlier during the tournament, Uganda’s 43-year-old spinner Frank Nsubuga, who gave away only four runs and claimed two wickets against PNG.
New Zealand, who are already out of contention for the next round, had started the tournament losing consecutive games against West Indies and Afghanistan. In their previous game, the Black Caps had bested Uganda by nine wickets.
The three time semifinalists and runner ups from the 2021 edition of the tournament have been one of the big teams that have been knocked out of the competition in the group stages.
Also out of contention from the Super-8 are 2009 and 2014 winners, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
