French Open Controversy: Boris Becker Turns Blind Eye to Steffi Graf to Hype Alexander Zverev for the Final

Must read

Today French Open enters the last phase, with only the men’s final on the court. Carlos Alcaraz Garfia will be clashing with Alexander Zverev for the Musketeers’ Trophy, with both players fighting for their first Roland Garros title. In a bid to boost the morale of the German ace, his fellow compatriot and former World No.1, Boris Becker stirred a controversy as he snubbed another tennis GOAT from Germany.

Amidst the French Open fever that has gripped Paris to the hilt, Becker is in the midst of it. And not for good reasons! As hordes of tennis fans are tipping towards the young Spanish sensation, Alcaraz, Becker is rallying the weights for the German tennis star, who is on his way to winning his maiden Grand Slam title. However, not everyone was in line with the former World No. 1. While cheering for Zverev, he forgot one of the tennis GOATs from Germany, Steffi Graf!

It seems that he forgot the the WTA superstar when he claimed today to be a historic day for Germany and said “We never had a champion here“. However, this was factually incorrect, as Steffi Graf had won the French Open back in the 1990s and not once or twice but 6 times! Fans would certainly remember, the 32-minute demolition of Natasha Zvereva at the hands of Graf back in the 1988 French Open final. Moreover, Graf just lost 13 points in the whole match, a marvelous feat which is yet to be paralleled by any player. Though Iga Swiatek did come close, with her 40-minute match, the 22-time Grand Slam champion still holds the top spot.

Roddick reveals Paris’s preference for Alcaraz over Alexander Zverev

It’s not uncommon for fans to support one player. However, it seems that this time Paris again wants to see a Spaniard lifting the Roland Garros trophy as they have snubbed the German tennis ace. In hopes to see the shadow of 14-time French Open champion, Rafael Nadal in Alcaraz. And Andy Roddick confirmed the mood in Paris.

While praising Alcaraz’s serve against Sinner in the semifinal, he said, “He could make the courts so much wider, right? You had to cover three more steps on both sides. Alcaraz was able to do that against Sinner today, I think he will be able to do that against Zverev.”
