Hold! Despite Evans’ best efforts from deuce Rune flies through the next two rallies and holds serve. He’s now two games clear in the second set.

It’s seemingly a long way back for Evans from here.

The net approach is the go-to tactic from both players. Evans has won 14/18 points when he’s come forward with Run successful 10/15 times.

At 30-30, Evans pumps a return of serve an inch or so over the back of the baseline to give Rune the chance to hold and secure his break.

Rune finds the net from the first serve before targeting Evans’ backhand. The Brit manages to to dance around the ball and find the baseline with a well hit forehand. Rune’s return is sent too long and the game goes to deuce.

Rune gets the break! He utilises his approach to the net once again to force Evans deep but the Brit manages to get in behind the ball and keep the rally going.

He spies the chance for a lob but lands it just over the back of the baseline and sends his opponent in the lead. It was the right shot but slightly executed wrongly.

This is close. Evans manages to hold serve under intense pressure from Rune, saving a few break points on the way. In the next game the Brit earns a break point of his own.

Rune serves out wide from a second serve and sprints to the net for a volley follow up. Evans glides across the court and whips a forehand back which just clips the top of the net.

Oh there’s the clincher. Rune gives it the old fist pump after securing the first break of serve in this set. He challenges Evans and sneaks into a 30-40 lead against the Brit’s serve.

Then in a tense rally which sees both men head to the net, Evans miscues a backhand slice and gifts the game to Rune who is now serving for the opening set.

Djokovic, 37, says he therefore has “low expectations and high hopes” as he targets a 25th Grand Slam ahead of a busy summer which also includes Wimbledon and the Olympics in Paris.
