VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton golf team has received the Team Sportsmanship Award from the Northeast Conference for the Spring of 2024, the league announced Tuesday.
According to the NEC, the award is designed to acknowledge the team in each conference sport that, in the opinion of its peers, most closely demonstrates good sportsmanship based on the NEC Principles of Sportsmanship and Standards of Conduct. Voting takes place at the end of each season by each team and head coach, who rank teams within the conference based on a set of criteria.
“It’s an honor to receive this team award,” said Binghamton Golf Head Coach Bernie Herceg. “We are always trying to portray the true ethics that go along with this game, such as honesty, integrity and sportsmanship. Congratulations to our players.”
The Bearcats completed their first season in the NEC in 2023-24. The team would finish fifth at the NEC Men’s Golf Championship. Individually, Evan Sitts would finish the tournament tied for fifth, qualifying for the All-Tournament Team in the process. Afterwards, Sitts would receive Second Team All-Conference honors from the league.
Additionally, the Binghamton men’s tennis team also earned the Team Sportsmanship Award from the NEC, making them and the men’s golf team the first two programs in the history of Binghamton Athletics to earn the honor from the league.
