Google Leak Details All-New Pixel 9 Pro Design Decision

Must read

Last year, Google launched two new Pixel handsets, with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro defining what an “AI-First” smartphone is. With an annual release schedule, the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro will demonstrate the evolution of AI.

But which handsets will carry the flag for this message?

There is an expectation that Google will launch three Pixel 9 models. The Pixel 9 will be a direct descendant of the Pixel 8, while the Pixel 9 Pro will offer a higher “pro” specification level but be the same size as the Pixel 9. That leaves space for a larger handset with higher specifications. The presumptively named Pixel 9 Pro XL has been discussed previously, and a new leak backs up the claims.

The team at Android Central have been supplied with Pixel 9 cases from manufacturer Thinborne. These include cases for the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL (and a note that the Pixel 9 case is listed on its website). Given the high tooling costs for a case, and the precise specs needed for accurate placement of cutouts, controls, and buttons, it’s highly likely that these case dimensions reflect the physical size of the finished Pixels.

The case design reflects the new style of camera bar with a rounded oblong island rather than a bar that stretches edge-to-edge along the rear of the handset, and a less pronounced curve along the four edges,

Thinborne also has a listing for a fourth premium Pixel to launch this year, namely the Pixel Fold 2. This will follow up last year’s debut foldable from Google, but there is an interesting wrinkle in the Fold 2. There is discussion that the standalone branding will be (ahem) folded into the Pixel 9 family and join the three candybar smartphones when they are launched later this year. It’s still listed as the Fold 2, but don’t be surprised if the Pixel 9 Pro Fold appears in its place.
