Government intervenes to maintain ban on football away fan travel

The government has intervened to prevent the lifting of a ban on away fan travel in the country’s top football leagues.

Justice and Public Order Minister Marios Hartsiotis sent a letter to the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) on Friday, urging them to reconsider their decision to lift the ban.

The letter cited continued concerns from the police, who believe the measure has been effective in reducing serious incidents. Hartsiotis reportedly advocated for the ban to remain in place until a new law on combating fan violence is passed.

The ministry previously highlighted the positive impact of the ban in a statement on June 11, acknowledging isolated incidents but emphasising a decrease in major violence. They also foreshadowed potential action in response to the CFA’s decision.

“The Ministry of Justice and Public Order and the Police will duly evaluate and take into account this decision by the CFA, in relation to the risks it may entail, and will proceed with their own actions, always within the strict framework of the applicable legislation, with the sole purpose of ensuring the safety of genuine fans and citizens of the Republic of Cyprus,” the statement read.
